Charging people a 600 ISK (€4, $5) fee for visiting Geysir geothermal area has been deemed illegal by the District Court of south Iceland.
On Mach 15, landowners at Geysir began to charge visitors who wanted to view the famous natural spectacle. The act started a debate over whether or not landowners were allowed to charge visitors seen as part of the area is owned by the Icelandic State which, currently, believes anyone should be able to visit the area – free of charge.
According to the spokesman of the landowners, Garðar Eiríksson, it has yet to bee deciced whether the ruling will be appealed to the Supreme Court of Iceland.
One of Iceland's most famous natural landmarks will remain open for visitors without payment.
