Despite an unusually warm weather during the first weeks of December and this past fall, meteorologists at the Icelandic Meteorological Office have not yet ruled out the chance of a white Christmas in Iceland, the local newspaper Morgunblaðið reports. Theodór Freyr Hervarsson, a meteorologist with the Icelandic Met Office told Morgunblaðið that temperatures will drop by middle of next week, with chances of snow, raising the hope that we might have a white ground by Christmas eve.

Theodór told Morgunblaðið that it is still too early to predict what the weather will be on December 24 and 25, but that early next week temperatures could have dropped below freezing all around Iceland. A constant procession of low pressure zones is currently passing over Iceland, bringing with it strong winds, rain and constantly shifting weather and temperatures above freezing. Next week, however, temperatures should have dropped below zero.
By December 20 Theodór expects Reykjavík will see the temperature in Reykjavík to have dropped below freezing, followed by some snow showers later in the week. December 24 and 25 are still too far ahead to allow any predictions he points out, but adds that it is „by no means impossible“ that we will have a white Christmas.
