Great amounts of snow is still in the central highlands and Öskjuleið is only the second mountain road to be open to traffic this summer.

“The central highlands open when they open. There is still a considerable amount of snow in the area and that’s why it remains closed to traffic,” G. Pétur Matthíasson, IRCA’s spokesperson, told Morgunblaðið newspaper.
