The carcass of a killer whale has washed ashore on the beach of Kolgrafafjörður fjord on the North shore of Snæfellsnes peninsula. According to the local news site Skessuhorn the animal is almost entirely intact, most likely died recently, as it has yet to start to decompose seriously. It is not yet clear what authorities will do with the carcass, but rotting whale carcasses are usually buried to minimize stench. For now the smell has been minimized by the cold weather.

Skessuhorn reports that a significant number of curious onlookers visited the carcass yesterday as it is possible to get quite close to the site on any 4×4. The whale was found on the West beach of the fjord, by the point Eyraroddi at the mouth of the fjord. The north part of Kolgrafafjörður fjord is known as Urthvalafjörður, The Fjord of Urthvalir. The word urthvalir is an obscure ancient word believed to mean whale cow.
