Captain and first mate of intercepted Russian trawler found drunk 5746

A ship from the Icelandic Coast Guard was sent to intercept a Russian trawler after suspicions arose that its captain was drunk on Saturday night. The captain had sounded drunk when he contacted the Coast Guard in preparation of the trawler docking in Hafnarfjörður harbour.

According to the National Broadcasting Service RÚV, the Coast Guard and local police boarded the trawler and found both the captain and his first mate drunk.

The ship was brought to harbour yesterday morning. Local police are investigating the matter further. Sailing under the influence of alcohol is punishable by fines or up to two years in prison according to Icelandic maritime law.
