13. mar 2023 20:57

A small bus carrying 19 foreign travellers and a driver was blown off the road north of Kleifarvatn lake on Reykjanes peninsula. Nobody was hurt in the accident. An ambulance which had been dispatched to the scene was also blown off the road before it reached the bus. Members of Iceland Search and Rescue companies in the capital region managed to get the ambulance back on the road without much trouble.

The bus was parked when a powerful gust of wind blew it onto its side. Conditions in the region were extremely difficult due to high winds combined with sleet, rain and melting snow.

Krýsuvíkurvegur, one of the roads which cross Reykjanes peninsula from north to south was closed for several hours yesterday while ICE-SAR and police got the bus back on the road.

In addition to the bus and the ambulance ten passenger vehicles got stuck on the road to the north of where the bus was blown off the road. Police and ICE-SAR assisted these people after the passengers in the bus had been helped. The local newspaper Morgunblaðið reports that rescue operations continued past midnight.
