Police in East Iceland has asked people to lock their doors and close their windows when leaving the house. Rural people in Iceland have until now not felt the need to lock their doors. A group of burglars, disguised as foreign travelers, has been terrorizing small towns in North and East Iceland in recent weeks. Police suspects the burglaries are organized by a foreign criminal gang.

No longer safe to leave your house unlocked
Residents in Eskifjörður and Neskaupsstaður, two small towns in the Eastfjords, noticed suspicious individuals who knocked on windows and doors, claiming to be searching for accommodation. When nobody comes to the door the men then try to get into the house, where they steal valuables. At least one home in Eskifjörður was burglarized by these individuals. Similar cases have been reported in other towns and villages in the south, north and east in recent months.

Police believes the cases are connected, but it is not clear whether a single individual is responsible for all the burglaries. The burglars do not appear to be dangerous or violent. In every case where they have been confronted they have made a hasty escape.

Have you seen the burglars?
Police in East Iceland has asked people to remember to lock their doors and to report any suspicious activity. Police has also asked people to be on the lookout for a 30-something old male, 180 cm (6 ft) tall, with a neat dark beard. The man has been seen wearing a dark light jacket, carrying a brown backpack.

If you have any information about the string of burglaries, or if you notice anything suspicious, please call the Police, 112.
