Bridge over Eldvatn, South Iceland, closed due to glacial outburst flood 3583

The jökulhlaup, or glacial outburst flood, in Skaftá river swept away one of the beams supporting the bridge over Eldvatn near Ásar, prompting local authorities to close the bridge for traffic yesterday. According to Vísir, the bridge will remain closed today, Monday.

The discharge at Eldvatn peaked around 1 pm on Friday, showing discharge of approximately 2200 m³/s. The area outside the main water channel will be flooded for coming days.

According to information from the IMO, the rate of discharge increase from the gauge by Sveinstindur peak is the highest recorded since the station was established in 1971. The measured discharge peaked at around 2 am on Friday, measuring around 2100 m³/s.
