According to RÚV, construction of a bridge over Eldgjá, a forty kilometre (25 miles) long eruptive fissure in Vatnajökull National Park, Southeast Iceland, began during the weekend. In addition to the bridge, a panoramic viewpoint is to be constructed near Ófærufoss waterfall which falls into Eldgjá.
Access to Ófærufoss is not easy meaning materials need to be transported to the construction site with the aid of a helicopter. A natural stone arch used to stretch across the lower part of Ófærufoss waterfall but it collapsed into the river during spring thawing in 1993.
Park ranger Snorri Baldursson says the construction work is part of bettering access to tourist attractions located within the park.
