Brace yourself for a wet and rainy weekend 7011

13. mar 2023 20:55

Fall is upon us in Iceland. And fall means rain, wind and overcast skies. But as locals know, the fall weather can act as a natural Instagram filter, of sorts, making all colors and forms slightly softer, the chilly weather and rain reminding us of the fleeting beauty of summer and the inevitability of the cold, dark winter which is now just around the corner! To get most of this time of year you must dress in wind- and waterproof clothing and layers. Layers are key in Iceland.

Weekend weather
As is often the case, the heaviest rain will be in South and South-East Iceland, in the foothills of Vatnajökull glacier in the south east, and Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers in the south.

Tomorrow, Friday the Icelandic Meteorological Office is predicting widespread rain in South, West and South-West Iceland, but mostly dry in the north. A relatively moderate temperature of 6-13°C and the gentle breeze (windspeeds of 4-6 m/s (9-13 mph)) should make for a relatively pleasant day. Assuming you are dressed for the rain!

On Saturday the IMO is predicting deteriorating weather. An easterly and southeasterly gale or severe gale and considerable rain, especially in South-East and East Iceland. Temperature 8-15°C (46-59°F).

On Sunday the wind will have turned to a southerly near gale. The wind will bring with it rain which will slow to showers by afternoon. The only part of Iceland spared will be the north east.  Temperature 8-16°C (46-69°F), warmest in the northeast.

The rain will continue until early next week, as the IMO is expecting the southeasterly winds will continue to bring rain showers at least until Wednesday.
