The French literary magazine Lire has nominated the novel of the Icelandic author Jón Kalman Stefánsson, “The fish have no feet” the best foreign novel of 2015 in France. The award ceremony took place in the Grand Palais in Paris yesterday night.
Jón’s book, The fish have no feet, came out in in Iceland in 2013, but was translated into French by Eric Boury. Jón has published nine novels and three poetry collections. The novel is primarily set in Norðfjörður fjord and town in East Iceland and the town of Keflavík on the Reykjanes peninsula, and follows the life of working class people in these two fishing communities.
Jón Kalman told the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service that he was both proud and moved by the award. The literary magazine Lire, which was founded in 1975, gives an annual literary award in several categories, both new domestic books and foreign translations. In 2005 Jón Kalman Stefánsson was a awarded the Icelandic Literature Prize.
