Bono lookalike fooled locals and tourists in downtown Reykjavík during Airwaves 7335

Local gossip sites and news outlets have run breathless stories in the past few days about sightings of the Irish pop superstar Bono. The Bono-sightings seemed to make perfect sense as they coincided with the music festival Iceland Airwaves.

On Friday Vísir ran a story about Bono being spotted at a deli store outside downtown, where he bought a sourdough baguette and fresh parsley, and then a second story about him being seen at downtown café/bar Prikið. The newspaper Morgunblaðið published a story about Bono stopping by at a pet store.

These stories seemed a bit odd to us at Iceland Insider. Why had nobody stopped to wonder: Why is this international superstar wandering around Reykjavík alone, picking up parsley and stopping at random pet stores? To add weirdness to the baguette story, Bono was apparently on his own, but carrying a baguette with him when he entered the deli to buy another: Why would Bono be strolling around Reykjavík, alone, stopping at bakeries and delis to buy baguettes?

Bono also stopped for an impromptu concert at a corner downtown.

As photos of Bono posing with people at Laugavegur multiplied on social media more and more people started scratching their heads. This whole story didn't really add up. Reporters at Vísir finally managed to confirm that the Bono who had appeared in all those photos was not Bono at all, but the world's most famous Bono lookalike, a Serbian gentleman called Pavel Sfera.

The similarity between the two men is striking. Pavel makes a living as a Bono tribute artist and maintains a website where you can book him for events. The real Bono spent the weekend in Cannes at the NRJ music festival, not in Reykjavík.
