The road leading to the top of Bolafjall mountain by the village Bolungarvík in the Westfjords has been opened to traffic, the local Westfjords news site BB reports. The road, which climbs to the plateau on top of the mountain, is impassable for most of the year, and is usually only open during part of July and August.
A spectacular view
Bolafjall, which has a maximum elevation of 638 m (2093 ft), towers over the small fishing village Bolungarvík. One of four radar installations operated by the US Navy in Iceland during the Cold War was on top of the mountain. The radar installation was later turned over to the Icelandic Coast Guard.
The view from the top of Bolafjall is renowned for its beauty. The mountain provides a spectacular view of Hornstrandir Nature Preserve as well as the entire Ísafjarðardjúp fjord. Some say that on a clear day you can see all the way to Greenland from Bolafjall.
To get to Bolafjall mountain you drive the road from Bolungarvík west, and follow the signs to the radar station on the top of the mountain. On the way back you should continue further west, to Skálavík bay, which has a beautiful black sand beach.
CAUTION: The Bolafjall road, like other mountain roads (marked with an F, for fjallvegur, mountain road) are ONLY intended for 4x4s and specially equipped SUVs. People driving 2 wheel drive passenger cars should not attempt to drive mountain roads.
