Musician Björk Guðmundsdóttir has been nominated for the 2016 BRIT Awards in the International female solo artist category. Ariana Grande, Lana Del Rey, Courtney Barnett and Meghan Trainor are also shortlisted for the award.
Björk has won three BRIT Awards for International female solo artist, last in 1998, and has been nominated eight times. The artist was forced to release her latest album, Vulnicura, in January, nearly two months earlier than planned, after it was leaked online. The album was originally timed to be released on 7 March, to coincide with the opening of MoMA’s retrospective of Björk’s work. Vulnicura is Björk’s first album in four years. She last released Biophilia in October 2011.
Björk is not the only Icelandic musician being nominated for an international award; musician and composer Jóhann Jóhannsson has scooped an Oscar nomination for the second year in a row. Jóhann is nominated in the category Best Original Score for the film Sicario.
The award ceremony takes place on 26 February. According to the BBC, the ceremony will pay tribute to David Bowie following his death on Sunday. Björk was among the many artists to paid tribute to the British music legend and credited him as the person who inspired her to wear the iconic swan dress to the 73rd Academy Awards in 2001.
