Drivers are being asked to show extra caution as countless roads in Iceland have been badly damaged by the rough weather and heavy rains of recent weeks. Large holes have formed in roads in both urban and rural areas. The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration warns that dangerous holes have formed in the paving on parts of the Ring Road.

It is not fun to drive at full speed into holes like those pictured in the photos above: Unless you slow down you can easily blow out a tire or lose control of the vehicle.

Localized storms have also done their part, the IRCA reports. Last week's storm blew off large sections of the blacktop on the road in Hvalfjörður fjord, north of Reykjavík. These are not ideal road conditions.

Remember that the speed limit is based on good conditions: When there is ice or snow on the road, or when parts of the road have been washed or blown away by storms, drivers need to slow down!
