From Ísafjörður Fjord to Vigur Island
Daily trips by boat from Ísafjörður town to Vigur Island are scheduled at 2pm daily starting June 10th. The trip takes about 30-40 minutes. The island is privately owned and the same family has lived on the island since 1884. The island is only 2km long and approximately 400m wide at its widest. It’s possible to take a boat over to the island and then get a guided tour around the island with a coffee-stop at a house called Viktoríuhús. Trips can be booked through Vesturferðir in Ísafjörður (tel.+354.456.5111). If you’re visiting the Westfjords, a half-day trip to Vigur Island is something you shouldn’t miss. And for those still looking for puffins – Vigur Island is home to about 80 thousand of them over the course of the summer.
To Grímsey Island in 10 minutes
According to old folklore, the island of Grímsey in Steingrímsfjörður Fjord was created when three trolls decided to dig their way out from Vestfirðir mainland and create a Kingdom of Trolls. The island is now home to various birds and a large number of puffins. Boat trips from Drangsnes in Hólmavík only take about 10 minutes and they are then followed by a guided tour around the island. If the weather permits, the boat sails around the island and deep-sea fishing is given a shot.
Historical fun fact: In 1915, a lighthouse was built on the island. It was then re-built in 1949 after the Germans ruined the original lighthouse during an air-strike in World War II.
LÚR-Festival: The Middle of Nowhere
The art festival, LÚR (Langt Útí Rassgati, e. Farther out of Nowhere) is held in Ísafjörður Fjord between June 12th and 15th. A group of youths in Edinborg Cultural Center are the hosts of the festival but they used Karolina Fund as a way to raise funds for the project. The aim of the project is to provide a platform for young artists to come forward and meet other artists. Emphasis will be on visual arts, performing arts, and film. Anyone can participate in workshops that are being held during the Festival, but it’s recommend that people register.
Live from Sumarmölin Music Festival: The World Cup
For the second time in as many years, the Music Festival ‘Sumarmölin’ will be held at Drangsnes, on Saturday night (June 14th). The Festival is family friendly and among entertainers stepping on the stage is the ever-popular band, Moses Hightower. World Cup Fever has taken over the lives of many, and music fans are no exception. Because of this, the four games played on June 14th will be shown live on the big screen at Malarkaffi Café.
Other bands performing on Saturday night are: Samaris, Púsl, Sing Fang, Prins Póló, Borko og Futuregrapher, and Hermigervill.
