Experience Vatnajökull glacier
“If you are not pressed for time, I recommend a drive to Jöklasel mountain hotel, located on Skálafellsjökull glacier, 840 meters (2756 feet) above sea level. At the hotel you can rent a snowmobile and go for a drive on the glacier.”
Recommended by Albert Eymundsson, former mayor of the town Höfn in Hornafjörður.

A concoction of lush green valleys and glacial tongues
The hike to Svartifoss waterfall (Black Falls) in Vatnajökull Glacier National Park is an easy 4 km (2.5 mi) round-trip in fantastic environment where the landscape is a concoction of lush green valleys and glacial tongues edged by jagged mountain tops. Svartifoss flows over a drop of about 20 meters between columns of black basalt. What’s interesting is that once you’ve visited Black Falls and seen the basalt columns, you’ll be able to see how this natural formation has provided inspiration to architecture in Reykjavik. Both Hallgrímskirkja church and the National Theatre in Reykjavik recall the majestic basalt columns that surround Svartifoss.

Play a round of golf
Try the Silfurnesvöllur golf course, located on the outskirts of Höfn. It is a nice 9 hole course that stretches along the shore with a breathtaking view over Vatnajökull glacier.

Unwind in a geothermal pool with a view of Vatnajökull
Take a dip in the geothermal pools at Glacier World in Hoffell. It‘s the perfect place to unwind after a long drive or hike. From the pools you can enjoy a view of the glittering peaks of Vatnajökull glacier. The pools are open from 7am until 11 pm.

This is the Southeast section of Best of Iceland This Week, the only Icelandic guide of its kind. New every week.
