Fishermen day on the south coast – Sunday June 1, 2014
The first sunday of June each year is dedicated to fishermen. In the town of Höfn, there will be a festival in the harbour including a rowing competition as well as many more fun activities for the family. There will also be celebrations in Þorlákshöfn town, a family festival that will have numerous activites for kids. Both locations will provide the family with a action-packed weekend of fun.

Joy run from the town of Kirkjubæjarklaustur
For those interested in participating in a challenge competition surrounded by the amazing beauty of Iceland, sign-up for Slóðahlaup run in the outskirts of Kirkjubæjarklaustur town on May 31st. You can choose between a 16 km (10 mi) or a 6 km (3.75 mi) run. The 16 km (10 mi) route leads you up onto a moor, just north of Skaftá river. During the run you can enjoy a magnificent view, including the beautiful and  historical Eldmessutangi (Fire Sermon Point) which is where an encroaching lava branch flowing from the voluminous 1783 Laki crater eruptions miraculously stopped. Those who choose the  6 km run, will start approximately 500 meters before Skaftárrétt sheep pen and will also participate in a similar challenge competition. Find more information here.

Icelandic Fountain of Wellness
Only an hour drive from Reykjavík and a short distance from Þingvellir national park, mother nature has created amazing surroundings for Laugarvatn Fontana Spa. Geothermal heat simmers directly from the ground and the landscape is painted with beautiful mountain ranges.  This thermal bath and wellness centre is a stones throw from Laugarvatn lake, on the same spot where natural geothermal steam and the hot springs meet.

This is the South Iceland section of Best of Iceland This Week, the only Icelandic guide of its kind. New every week.
