The National Icelandic Horse Competition
The big final of Iceland's largest outdoor sporting event is this weekend. Also known as the Landsmót, the national horse competition showcases iceland's best horses and riders. The bi-annual event has been held since 1950 and is held at rotating locations. This year the festival is at the racing and exhibiton track called Gaddstaðaflatir in the town of Hella in South Iceland. Attendance for the 2008 event held in Hella reached 14,000 people and it will also be crowded this weekend.

While traveling in Iceland you are likely to see many of Iceland's smaller sized horses roaming around one of Iceland's many open fields. These unique horses are a big part of the Icelandic culture and are a big tourist attraction for visitors coming to Iceland. Klausturtrail in Kirkjubæjarklaustur
Klaustur trail is a 20 km walking trail complete with information about the geology, landscaping and history of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. A detailed brochure with a map about the Klaustur trail is available at the Skaftárstofa Information Centre in Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Additionally there is now an app available for download at the apple store, which will help guide you through the trail. Klausturtrail is not only for hiking, you can take part in a treasure hunt in Kirkjubæjarklaustur and its surroundings. Find artifacts and historical landmarks, which provides a fun game to keep the kids excited.
Summerconcerts in Skálholt
Starting on June 29th and continuing on through the month of July, the summer concerts in Skálholt offer a great opportunity to relax with the family and enjoy some fantastic summer music. Bands performing at the festival includes Ensemble Villancico, Nordic Affect, Music for the Mysteries, Hljómeyki, Skálholt Bach Consort, CAPUT, Corpo di Strumenti, Voces Thules, Páll Ragnar Pálsson. There is free admission for all guests, but donations are welcomed.
