Those staying in Iceland over the weekend be sure to take into account shortened opening hours during the Whitsun long weekend. Most stores will be closed on Sunday and have shortened opening hours on Monday.
Family Yoga in Viðey island
The weather forecast could not be better for this upcoming weekend, so why not take the whole family out to the small island of Viðey, just off the coast of Reykjavík, and do some yoga under the clear skies? If that is your cup of chamomile tea, here is a message from the organizers:
Join us for a family-friendly fundraiser for the Yogaheart in Iceland, on the 7th of June at 1 PM – 2.30 PM. We will do yoga postures, play games, breathe in the ocean air, and relax to the healing sound of the gong. We recommend bringing a blanket for relaxation, packing warm clothes for the weather and preparing food for a picnic.
Additionally, the restaurant in Viðey will be open to purchase refreshments. The price is 500 ISK per person but all children 3 and younger get in free. It is only possible to pay in cash on the island, but you can also prepay online and bring your receipt. All proceeds from the event will go to charity in the effort to teach more yoga in schools. The Icelandic Tattoo Convention
The annual Icelandic Tattoo Convention will take place for the 9th time this weekend at the infamous Bar 11. The convention begins today at 12pm. The event is open all weekend between 12 pm and 10 pm. Many of Iceland’s best tattoo artists will take part in the convention along with their foreign counterparts. See more here.
Guided art tours
Reykjavík Art Museum offers guided tours in English every Friday at their branch Kjarvalsstaðir museum (Flókagata 105, 105 Reykjavík) starting at 1 PM. Currently there are three exhibitions in the museum: Affinities, Seasons in Kjarval's Art, Kjarval (1885-1972) being one of Iceland's most beloved painters, and Reykjavík, Town, Structure.
Opening Concert of Harpa International Music Academy
Harpa International Music Academy, a music seminar and festival starts in Harpa Concert Hall on June 7. Opening the festival are young string players who have risen to prominence and won awards for their performances. Leading the line is 18-year-old In Mo Yang from Korea, who recently took home the second prize from the international Menhin Competition, one of the most prestigious music competitions in the world. Outdoor summer jazz
Jómfrúin restaurant’s annual Summer Jazz kicks off tomorrow at 3pm. The ever popular event takes place every Saturday between 3 pm and 5 pm. The restaurant’s outdoor area is a popular spot during the summer, as it is well sheltered from the cold northern breeze. Sit down, order an ice-cold pint and a Danish open-faced sandwich while you enjoy an open-air jazz concert.
The concerts are free of charge so be sure to arrive early. The Egill B. Hreinsson Trio will perform tomorrow, accompanied by Högni Egilsson, from the band Hjaltalín, and saxophone player Jóel Pálsson. Jómfrúin is located on Lækjargata 4 downtown Reykjavík.
A puppet theatre for the youngest generation
Brúðubíllinn, the Puppet-Car, will travel around the city this summer as it has done for decades. A performance will take place in Árbæjarsafnið Museum at 10 pm tomorrow (June 7th). The main play tells the story of a little watchdog that doesn’t know how to bark.
Entrance is free of charge.
