12 Hour Music Marathon
If you like alternative and indie rock music, the backyard of KEX Hostel in Reykjavík is the place to beon Saturday July 19th. The annual KEXPort music festival kicks off at noon and ends at midnight, with twelve bands performing, one every hour.
Performing this year are local bands Ghostigital, Dimma, Kimono, 1860, Reykjavíkurdætur, Kött Grá Pjé, Low Roar, Pétur Ben, Dj Flugvél & Geimskip, Atónal blús, Mr. Silla and Sometime. The festival is held in collaboration with Seattle radio station KEXP-FM .

Ólöf Arnalds live
Ólöf Arnalds had made quite a name for herself in the music scene of Iceland as well as abroad. She and bass player Skúli Sverrisson have been collaborating for many years, including on her newest release Palme, which is scheduled to hit record stores the 29th of September. On Saturday at 21:00 they will provide guests with a delightful evening of music from their combined repretoire at Mengi.
Shakespeare in Harpa
The world famous theatrical troupe Shakespeare’s Global Theatre is on a global tour and they will perform Hamlet in Harpa; neither Hamlet nor Shakespeare need any introduction but if you want to see Shakespeare in his native tongue then you should secure a ticket on the 23rd of June at 19:30. This is the only showing and this is the first time the Globe Theatre performs in Iceland.
Finnish Artists – Art Exhibition
On the 25th of July, the exhibition Jump in Diorama will be start. The exhibition is a collaboration between the Finnish artists Annika Dahlsten and Marrku Laakso. In Jump in Diorama the theme will be about the verification value of photographs, as well as questions regarding what is considered fake or real; because the artists raise the question: how do you define authenticity?
Annika and Marrku will also exhibit photos and videos from the nature and landscapes of Germany, Lapland and South Africa while also displaying Sami costumes they have inherited or created themselves. The exhibition is inspired by Marrku Lakkso’s family story, because in 1930 his great grandfather and grandmother were displayed in Germany in various zoos as Sami people.
Mengi Concert: Arnljótur Sigurðsson
The music venue Mengi is vibrant and it is an excellent place to see the best and newest in the indie scene in Iceland. On the 18th of July, Arnljótur Sigurðsson, who plays bass and sings for the Icelandic band Ojba Rasta, will be performing live as a solo artist to celebrate the debut of his new album Línur. Previously, Arnljótur has released Listauki in 2008. Arnljótur will perform material from his new album as well as older material. The concert starts at 9pm and the admission cost is 2.000 krónur.
Concert at Gljúfrasteinn, home of Iceland's Nobel laureate
During the summer there will be classical concerts every Sunday at the nobel laureate Halldór Laxness’ home Gljúfrasteinn; and on the the 20th of July Glódís M. Guðmundsdóttir will be performing Franz Schubert. Despite being young Glódís, born in 1990, has had a distinguished career as a solo artist and she has performed in Italy and Denmark. The concerts are every Sunday and have been running from the 1st of June until the 31st of August and they start at 16:00. Entrance fees are 1500 krónur per concert.
The National Museum of Iceland – Silverwork exhibition
To commemorate its 150th birthday The National Museum of Iceland has had various exhibitions during the year and one of the ongoing exhibitions is Icelandic silverwork; in the exhibition various silver objects from Iceland’s history are on display and the focus of the exhibition is the crafting of these objects. Guests can also see the tools that silversmiths utilized to create these objects.
New York State of Mind in Reykjavík
The musical collective of Alexandra Chernyshova – soprano, Irina Petrik – soprano, Kevin Kees – baritone and Einar Bjartur Egilsson on piano will perform arias and duets in English from reknown musicals and operas from Broadway at Harpa on the 23rd of July in Harpa. Tickets can be purchased online here and the price is 2.900 krónur.
Some of the musical playlist will include hits such as Some enchanted evening from South Pacific, Vanilla Ice Cream from She Loves Me, I hate Men from “Kiss Me, Kate”, Summertime from Porgy and Bess and If I loved you from Carousel. If you love the old showtunes, this might be a chance to rekindle your acquaintance with a loved one.
Organ concert in the Catholic Church
On Saturday at 20:30 in the Cathedral of Christ the King in Landakot, Armando Pierucci, a Franciscan monk, will be giving a free organ concert. Armando has studied at the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music in Rome and at the Conservatories of Naples, and Pesaro, graduating in Gregorian Chant, Pianoforte, Choral Music and Choir Conduction, Organ and Organ Composition. Armando has given concerts in Greece, Cyprus, Switzerland, Russia, Italy and Israel. Like mentioned previously, there is no admission cost.
Zebra Katz concert at Húrra
Zebra Katz is the creation of the many talented artist Ojay Morgan from New York City who seeks inspiration from artists such as Nina Simone, James Blake and André 300. Zebra Katz is known for his great performances and he has performed with artists such as Lana Del Ray and others. You can find some of his work on Soundcloud. Besides Zebra Kats where will be a plethora of djs that night including Kitty Von Sometime. The venue is Húrra and it costs 2000 krónur.
