Bright lights
Harpa Music and Conference Center is not only magnificent to look at, sitting on the dock of Reykjavik bay, but it also has a quite interesting story. Its glass walls, designed by Ólafur Elíasson, an Icelandic-Danish artist residing in Denmark, are one of a kind, but Harpa’s staff is knowledgeable about all the ins and outs of the majestic building. A tour of the building is available daily at 9:00am, 11:00am, 1:30pm, and 3:30pm.
How to become Icelandic
For the third consecutive year, visitors (and locals) are invited to learn ‘How to become Icelandic in 60 minutes’ at Harpa Music and Conference Center. The show is on every night this week at 7pm, and as its title suggest – it’s only 60 minutes long. It’s a one-man show in English that points out the quirks and stereotypes of Icelanders and the Icelandic culture by going through some of Iceland’s major historical events. Iceland Insider recommends you spend an hour, preferably towards the end of your stay, to see just how spot-on actor Bjarni Haukur really is in his interpretations.
Real-life (fake) Reindeer
It may not be Christmas, and the Coca-Cola Santa Claus supposedly doesn’t live in Iceland, but we’ve still got reindeer and now they’re inside Harpa and out of the rain. The exhibit, “Wild Reindeers in Iceland” is open daily from the time Harpa, but the show is interactive and gives its guest an opportunity to see and engage with reindeer and to learn about their lives. Additionally, ten Icelandic artist were given a full-size model of a reindeer to project their artwork onto, showing how art and nature can mix in a fun and interesting way. Tickets can be bought online, or at the reception at Harpa.
Roller skate your way into summer
Iceland’s Roller Derby team in cooperation with the city of Reykjavík are hosting a roller skating event outside Harpa Music and Conference Center on Sunday, July13th, but should the unpredictable Icelandic weather, decide to be better on Saturday, the event might get moved one day forward. The Icelandic Band, White Signal will get the party started at 4pm, and skaters and non-skating enthusiasts are all welcome to join in on the fun.
Unsteady objects
An exhibit titled ‘Unsteady Objects’ by Icelandic artist Ingunn Fjóla Ingþórsdóttir opened yesterday at Týsgallerí Gallery. Ingunn has in the past four years been noticed for the way her art interacts with the space it’s in, and the audiences’ space awareness is often times the focus of her art. Ingunn’s attempt to work with form, colour, and lines play a key role and seduce the audience to movement creating a miscellaneous perception of the works.
No heels allowed
Tonight, for one night only, Harpa Music and Conference Center will turn one of its many halls into a club. But this will be no ordinary disco, but a party hosted by NIKE and thus, the only way to get in is by wearing your favorite NIKE shoes. The event is invite only, but the way to land an invite is luck of the draw. Post a picture of your NIKE outfit on Instagram using the hashtag #sneakerball_rvk and you just might be dancing the night away – without killing your feet!
Electro at Lucky Records
Two world famous Swedish artists, Kan3da and Luke Eargoogle will be spinning records at the legendary Lucky Records store on Rauðarárstígur near Hlemmur Bus Stop tonight, Friday. It won’t only serve as a musical feast, but you can also feed growling stomachs from the on-site grill, and feast your eyes on graffiti work that will be created during the party. The festivities begin at 7pm and guests are encouraged to bring their drink of choice.
World Cup Finals
Arena de Ingólfstorg is will not be the only place where you can enjoy the World Cup Finals, live, under the (hopefully) clear skies of Reykjavik. KEX Hostel will be showing the game on a 5sq.meter (53.8sq.ft) screen supplied by the Sony Center on the porch outside of the Hostel it self. For those looking for a roof over their head, the game will also be on the TVs inside, at the Hostel’s restaurant. Keep in mind though that the CEO of KEX Hostel has announced that with the assistance of the Sony Center, the party at KEX on Sunday is likely to be equal to the football-fever at the Copacabana beach in Rio, Brazil. Kick-off is at 7:00pm GMT on Sunday, July 13th.
A party! It's the Logical Progression
Wednesday, July 16th, the Icelandic rock band Grísalappalísa and DJ Flugvél & Geimskip will be hosting a party they refer to as being “the party of the century”. The party kicks off at Arnarhóll at 9:00pm GMT where the band and the DJ will be debuting a new National Anthem. Grísalappalísa is the reason for the party, but the band has just released their new album, “Logical Progressionarnar”. After the anthem debut at Arnarhóll, the party will continue at Húrra Bar where people can dance the night away and purchase the newly released album.
