The Harbour House is open after years of restorations
Five new exhibitions opended on May 29 at the Duus Culture Centre in the town of Reykjanesbær in addition to its permanent collections. The centre is formed of several old and historic buildings. The oldest and most remarkable is the Harbour house that opened this week after years of restoration. It is made of wood and was built in 187. The youngest is a concrete structure finished in 1954. The complex includes four exhibition centres and the Reykjanes Maritime Centre, the Museum of Art and the Museum of Heritage. Admission is free. Open weekdays 12 PM- 5 PM, weekends 1 PM – 5 PM
A step back in time
Stekkjarkot farm in Reykjanesbær town provides a telling insight into how the cottages of fishermen and small farmers in Iceland used to looke like. This is a classic example of the roughly built turf, stone cottage, once common on the Reykjanes peninsula and other coastal areas of Iceland. The older part of the cottage, with its open hearth, dates back to the 19th century. Admission is free. Open 1 PM – 5 PM
The Blue Lagoon Challenge
OK, the Blue Lagoon Challenge is not this week but Saturday June 7th. But as early registration ends June 1st (at 12 pm) we will include it in this week's guide. This is the 16th annual bike race hosted by the Reykjavik Cycling Club in collaboration with the Blue Lagoon Spa. Only one distance is available, the 60km (37.5 mi). Neutral start from Ásvallalaug sports-arena in the town of Hafnafjörður at 4 PM, police escort to Kaldárselsvegur road where timing starts. Access to the Blue Lagoon and a light meal after the race is included in the race fee.
