The Annual Arctic Open takes place on June 26th-28th this year. This is no regular golf tournament, but one that’s played at midnight in the midnight sun. The Akureyri Golf Club hosts this tournament, known as the Arctic Open Golf Championship. It’s an international event that has attracted 120 international participants at most so far. This year marks the 28th Arctic Golf Tournament and your chance to play at the northernmost golf course in the world. The entry fee is US$385 and participants are encouraged to register as soon as possible.
Summer Solstice in Grímsey
Ever wondered what it’d be like living above the Arctic Circle? The inhabitants of Grímsey could probably tell you. Grímsey Island is the northernmost part of Iceland and the only part of the country that lies above the Arctic Circle. On June 21st, they will be celebrating the summer solstice and are offering visitors to take part.
You can get to Grímsey Island by boat and by flight. Should you choose to go by boat the ferry leaves from the town of Dalvík just 40km north of Akureyri and the boat ride takes 3hours. The ferry carries 108 passengers and departs Dalvík and Grímsey three-times a week. It’s recommend to book your fare in advance by contacting the city of Akureyri.
Blue North Music Festival
The oldest blues festival in Iceland is held annually in the town of Ólafsfjörður in North Iceland and it’s being held for the 15th time this year. For two days only, June 27th and 28th, visitors and locals get to listen to a variety of musicians showcase their talent. In addition to the ear candy, youth and young adults (between the ages of 14 and 20) are invited to participate in a nature walk and song with Julie Seiller between June 22nd and 24th. The walks are used as inspiration to create your own music by observing the nature and the sounds of nature. A schedule of events is not online yet, but will hopefully be soon.
