Belgium beats Iceland 3-1 in a friendly football match but the real business is on Sunday 1938

The Icelandic national football team's five-match winning streak came to an end yesterday evening when the team lost to Belgium, 3-1, in Brussels. Thankfully this was a friendly match.

Iceland made nine changes to the starting team that had beat Holland 3-0 in Reykjavík on November 13th, in the third round of the 2016 Euro qualifiers.

Iceland started strong but it was the home team that drew first blood when defender Nicolas Lombaerts scored in the eleventh minute. It took Iceland only one minute to equalize with striker Alfreð Finnbogason forcing the ball over the goal-line after a corner kick.

The score was 1-1 at half time but after a series of substitutions for both teams in the second half Belgium managed to get in two goals, one from Divock Origin and the other from Romeu Lukaku. The final score, 3-1.

Overall Iceland's fringe players gave a fine performance.

Real business commences on Sunday when Iceland faces the Czech Republic in Plzen, in the fourth round of the Euro 2016 qualifiers.

After three victories Iceland leads the group, on goal difference from the Czech Republic.
