Beef import to Iceland increases tenfold 84

Beef import to Iceland increased tenfold during the first six months of the year. Around 535 tonnes (1179473 pounds) of beef was imported to the country during the first six months of this year, compared to 50 tonnes (110231 pounds) in 2013.

According to Fréttablaðið newspaper the increase in demand for beef is attributed to the great influx of foreign tourists visiting Iceland. Icelandic farmers do not have the means to increase production as the industry is limited to small-scale breeding.

The majority of the imported beef, 67 tonnes (147709 pounds) originates from Germany.
