The northern lights were in sensational form above Iceland this week and as we — highly unusual for the season — also enjoyed night after night of clear skies we were treated to quite a spectacle.
Two northern lights enthusiasts, photographer and film-maker Snorri Þór Tryggvason and Sævar Helgi Bragason from the Icelandic astronomy website Stjörnufræðivefurinn have made a beautiful short film commemorating the week. They spent 28th and 29th of September racing around Reykjavík filming on sixteen different locations around the capital.
The city officials off Reykjavík decided to turn of all street lights on Wednesday night to create as conditions as possible within the city limits. People flocked to the streets, looked upwards, waiting for the sky to light up. And as Snorri and Sævar always emphasize, nature rewards patience — and nature did not disappoint. The city lights turned off and the aurora borealis turned on.
All the scenes are captured in the film below are 4k resolution, in real time and show the actual speed of the northern lights, which were so strong these nights that it was even possible to use smartphones to capture decent images of the lights.
Filmed on 2 x Sony a7s´s, mounted with f1.4 and f2, wide angle lenses, and an Atomos Shogun external 4k recorder.
