Beautiful Holuhraun time-lapse video captured on November 24th 2001

13. mar 2023 20:08

The beautiful Holuhraun time-lapse video below was captured yesterday (November 24th) by scientists from the Icelandic Met Office. It shows around three hours of the eruption condensed to 32 seconds. The sun and the moon both join the action.

Holuhraun is located in the central highlands North of Vatnajökull glacier. Scientists making field observations are often working in very challenging conditions. This is an area that is usually only accessible from July to September and then only by using well-equipped 4wd vehicles. The weather can be extreme, with raging blizzards and almost total loss of visibility. And then we can have days like yesterday, when IMO's scientists seized the window of opportunity to create this video.
