Beach cleaning in the amazing Hornstrandir Nature Reserve 2741

13. mar 2023 20:14

Care about the coast? Interested in the wilderness? Then you should team up with volunteers that are visiting the remote Hornstrandir Nature Reserve on May 23rd to clean beaches.

The Westfjords' northeastern region was inhabited until middle of last century when the last farmers and fishermen moved away. A lighthouse keeper stayed at Hornbjargsviti lighthouse until 1995. Since he packed his bags, no one lives there year round.

There are no roads to the area and low-flying planes are banned in order to maintain the serenity of the area. This is Iceland’s most remote part outside of the central highlands.

The sea delivers all kinds of plastic and parts of fishing nets to the shore, threatening birds and marine wildlife when animals accidentally eat or becoming entangled in the litter.

Last year volunteers cleaned beaches in Hlöðuvík cove and Kjaransvík cove, both located in Hornstrandir. Now the plan is to focus on Látravík cove, where Hornbjargsviti lighthouse is located, and the surrounding area.

A boat will take the volunteers from the village of Ísafjörður to Hornstrandir. Participants should pack a lunch, but at the end of the working day the Ísafjörður municipality will host a barbecue at the lighthouse.

Move fast if you are interested. The boat can only transport a limited number of people.
