The Icelandic BDSM community will not partake in this year’s Gay Pride parade after having been denied participation last year, reports Gay Iceland. However, the association is set to hold a lecture about BDSM during the annual Gay Pride week that takes place in August.
Magnús Hákonarson, BDSM Iceland’s chairman, told Gay Iceland that the practice of BDSM still evokes controversy and he believes that the parade's organisers are “afraid of upsetting” people who attend the popular event. “In the old days we were always part of the MSC float in the parade but nowadays that is deemed too risky,” he explained.

According to Gunnlaugur Bragi Björnsson, one of Gay Pride’s organisers, people differ in their opinions as to whether BDSM belongs under LGBT’s umbrella or not. “However, we encourage people to discuss these matters openly and that’s why we organised the open lecture about BDSM taking place during Hinsegin dagar,” he told Vísir.is.
