'Barbershop conference' lead by Iceland to begin in NYC next week 1658

Iceland will convene a two day-long UN conference on women and gender equality in New York City next week, reports Vísir.is. The event has been dubbed the ‘barbershop conference’ as only men are invited to partake.

The conference is part of the global campaign HeForShe, launched late last year. According to Iceland‘s foreign affairs minister, Gunnar bragi Sveinsson, it’s important to get men, and male leaders, involved in the fight for gender equality.

We want to bring men and boys to the table on gender equality in a positive way, and our hope is that they’ll continue to spread the message, the minister said, adding that the event will focus on violence against women.
