The Bahama-registered cargo ship Green Freezer ran aground in Fáskrúðsfjörður, East Iceland, around 8 pm yesterday evening. According to the National Broadcasting Service, RÚV, no injuries or environmental damage were reported.
The ship’s owners have until next high tide – around 10 am this morning – to try and free the vessel. Should the operation prove unsuccessful the Icelandic Coast Guard will likely intervene. The guard ship Þór is currently on its way to assist with rescue attempts. According to RÚV rescue fees could amount to 100 million krónur (647.836 euros / 834.445 US dollars).
