The Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority, Matvælastofnun, has begun to investigate twelve horse deaths that occurred on Sunday in Bessastaðatjörn lake in the Reykjavík suburb of Álftanes. It is thought the horses had wandered onto the frozen lake during a blizzard and then fallen through the ice into the deadly cold water.

“Our employees are looking into the incident,” said Sigríður Björnsdóttir, equine veterinarian with Matvælastofnun. Incidents such as this are a rarity, although horses have been fatally injured after falling into ditches. “Horses usually do not wander into situations such as this,” Sigríður told Fréttablaðið newspaper.

The bodies of the horses were recovered yesterday, Monday, which provided a sense of closure for their owners.
