The speed limit on Skeiðarárbrú bridge, southeast Iceland, has been lowered to 50 km/h (31 mph) due to the bridge’s poor condition. A new double-lane bridge over Skeiðarársandur sands is scheduled to be completed in October.
According to the National Broadcasting Service, the bridge’s road surface is extremely run-down and can badly damage car tires.
Skeiðarárbrú is Iceland’s longest bridge and the final part of Route 1, the Ring Road, to be completed. It was taken into use in 1974 and crosses Skeiðará glacier river, which has its source on Skeiðarárjökull glacier (one of Vatnajökull’s many outlet glaciers).
