Companies operating at the Keflavík International Airport expect to add at least 1,500 new employees by next summer the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service reports.
More passengers call for more employees
Isavia, which operates the airport, projects that the number of passengers at the airport will grow by 28% next year. The total number of travellers passing through the airport in 2016 is expected to be 6.25 million. Icelandair Ground Services IGS and WOW Air, the two largest carriers at Keflavík Airport, will need to respond to this increase by adding staff.
The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service estimates that the largest companies at the airport, including IGS, the two largest airlines, and the largest retailers will need to add at least 1,500 new employees by next summer. A number other airlines as well as businesses which service the airport or travellers passing through it, will also need to add staff.
Both Icelandair and WOW Air expect to add hundreds of employees next summer, and all companies who have operations at the airport, including the Tax Free store and other retail and restaurants at the airport, report they will need to add staff.
The local labour market cannot supply the airport
Gunnar S. Olsen, the head of IGS, told The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service that the company will have to add not be able to find all the necessary employees domestically. At least 150 will have to be hired from abroad, he argues.
The local labour market in the Reykjanes peninsula is simply not large enough to supply the airport, Gunnar tells RÚV. Following the 2008 crash unemployment in the region was the highest in Iceland, reaching 13.1% in 2010. This year it has dropped to 4.1%.
