At 14:55 (2:55 pm) on Wednesday October 24 Icelandic women will go on strike to protest against discrimination and gender based inequality. The strike is an annual event which has taken place on October 24th since 1975 when an estimated 90%  of Icelandic women went on strike to draw attention to gender discrimination and the fact that women are not paid the same as men for the same work.

The Labor Movement has encouraged employers and businesses to respect the strike and allow women to leave their jobs. Many businesses, including banks, will close at 14:55 tomorrow in solidarity with the strikers. At 15:30 women will gather for a mass demonstration on Arnarhóll hill in downtown Reykjavík.

The city of Reykjavík will close several streets in the city center due to the protests. A stage will be erected on Kalkofnsvegur street in front of the hill, causing the street to be closed to all traffic from 9:00 in the morning until 21:00 (9 pm) in the evening. The city has advised drivers that there will be extensive disruption to traffic from 15:00 until the end of the demonstration on Arnarhóll.
