A 3.4 magnitude earthquake was detected on Loki Ridge (western Vatnajökull glacier) at 05:56 am today, Wednesday, according to the Icelandic Met Office. The earthquakes epicentre was 5 km (3 miles) below the glacier’s surface.

Around 330 earthquakes have been detected in the area between 27 June and 3 July, none of them exceeded the magnitude of 2.5. Around 40 earthquakes were reported in Mýrdalsjökull (Mt. Katla), most of them inside Katla’s caldera. A small earthquake swarm occurred in Húsmúli (Hengill) and three more in Mt. Hekla. Bárðarbunga, however, was rather quiet during that time period compared to recent weeks.
