Residents in East Iceland were baffled to experience temperatures usually only seen during the summer last night. The Dalatangi weather station in East Iceland recorded recorded temperatures above 16°C (61°F) last night. This is the second time in two weeks. On November 24 the Dalatangi station recorded temperatures topping 20°C (68°F) in the middle of the night.

Icelanders are more accustomed to seeing temperatures in excess of 20°C during the summer. In fact, anything above 20°C is considered an exceptionally good summer's day, and 16°C would qualify for a warm summer's day as well. Seeing these kinds of temperatures in December is therefore highly unusual.
Last few days have been unseasonably warm in all of Iceland due to warm southerly winds. However, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, temperatures are likely to drop in the next coming days. East Iceland, for example, is expected to see freezing temperatures later today. Travellers in Eastern Iceland are therefore warned that roads will be slippery due to ice.
