Agela Merkel, the Chancellor of Germany, personally congratulated Dagur Sigurðsson, head coach of the German national handball team, on winning the European championship in Poland yesterday, reports the National Broadcasting Service. The Chancellor also invited the trainer and his team to join her for a cup of coffee when they return home from Poland.
“She had been following the team’s progress and called me after the win and invited us over for a cup of coffee,” Dagur said during an interview on Bylgjan radio station this morning.
Dagur, who used to play for the Icelandic national handball team and currently coaches the German Bundesliga team Füchse Berlin, has been described as a “godsend for German handball” by local media. The German team, the youngest team in history of the championship to win the title, beat Spain 24-17.
