Around 10 million krónur (64.973 euros / 84.097 US dollars) were raised through the American internet campaign “Save the Icelandic Goat from Exctinction” in a bid to save Iceland’s largest goat farm from being put up for auction. Jóhanna B. Þorvaldsdóttir, who runs the goat farm Háafell in Hvítársíða in Borgarfjörður, West Iceland, says she is extremely thankful to all who lent a helping hand.
Jóhanna’s farm is heavily in debt and was to be put up for auction later this month, meaning all its 400 goats would have been led to slaughter – that is half of the world’s Icelandic goat population. The Icelandic goat, also known as the Settlement goat, is very rare outside of Iceland and is classified as an endangered species.
The National Broadcasting Service reports that Jóhanna will now try and reach an agreement with her bank and hopes she can carry on with her work on the farm for years to come.
