It seems those stories have made some locals negatively predisposed to tourists in camper vans who seem to have been particularly associated with such acts.
Apologized in advance for driving a camper van
Aðalsteinn Már Þorsteinsson, a worker in a campsite in Laugar in North Iceland, tells local newspaper Morgunblaðið that he received an American couple recently that apologized to him in advance for driving such a vehicle.
The couple then proceded to tell him about their experience of locals taunting them and urging them no to relieve themselves in public which they had had no intention of doing in the first place.
Some camper vans not equipped with a lavatory
Aðalsteinn says that the real problem is that camper vans of this kind are allowed on the roads. Vehicles that are meant for staying in should have a lavatory but this brand does not.
Viktor Ólason, the CEO of Kúkú Campers that rents out camper vans, tells Morgunblaðið that he hopes the taunting of the American couple was an isolated incidenct.
He believes the story about tourists doing their business outdoors has been blown out of all proportion. The vast majority of his customers stay at campsites like the company recommends.
