The Aurora forecast of the Icelandic Meteorological Office for New Year's Eve is looking truly spectacular. In fact, New Year's Eve looks like it will be the best night this December to catch the Northern Lights.

The conditions are ideal: The Aurora activity on Saturday night is expected to be high, a 5 on the 1-9 scale, which can generate a truly spectacular show. What is especially promising, though, is that virtually all of of Iceland is expected to have clear skies, making it that much easier to see one of nature's most spectacular shows.

The IMO builds its forecast on combined information on the activity of the solar wind and hence the aurora activity, cloud cover, sunlight and moonlight. The activity for the Aurora on Saturday is 5. The IMO explains that grade 2 (low activity) can be beautiful and grade 3 (moderate) can be dazzling. Grade 4 (active) or 5 (high) can be truly spectacular.

The activity is expected to remain high (4, active), on January 1, but the cloud cover will be thicker than tonight. So, tonight you should not only look out for those fireworks, but also nature's most amazing light show!
