Iceland's parliament Alþingi has decriminalised blasphemy. This is a big victory for the Pirate Party which proposed the bill that was passed yesterday. According to the paragraph in the Icelandic Criminal Code that has now been abolished, blasphemy was considered a crime and those found guilty of it could face imprisonment or a fine.

The three Pirate Party MPs, Birgitta Jónsdóttir, Helgi Hrafn Gunnarsson, and Jón Þór Ólafsson, argued that the law was outdated and limited the freedom of speech as it prevented people from speaking out for fear of being charged.

Birgitta Jonsdottir, the captain of the pirates, was among many members of the party that celebrated the vote on Twitter yesterday.
