The Icelandic Coast Guard has sent all three rescue helicopters to the scene of a bus accident west of Kirkjubæjarklaustur village in South East Iceland. The Coast Guard sent of its helicopters to the scene immediately after the accident, but a third helicopter was sent shortly after 13:00 the third helicopter was sent to the scene.

The two first helicopters arrived at the National University Hospital at 13:50 with twelve people who suffered serious injuries in the accident. One person was pronounced dead at the scene. The Blood Bank has called for donations of blood in Group O to help
Passengers who were unharmed in the accident or suffered minor injuries were transported to an emergency shelter in Kirkjubæjarklaustur. A second tour bus has been sent to Kirkjubæjarklaustur to transport the travellers to Reykjavík.
