Akureyri harbour has been nominated for the Seatrade Cruise Awards, as Port of the Year. Akureyri is one of three harbours shortlisted for the award. The other two are the Port of Olden in Nordfjörd in Norway as well as the British Virgin Islands Ports Authority. The ease with which cruise ships can dock at the harbour as well as the beauty of Eyjafjörður are the primary reasons for the nomination. Nominations for the Seatrade Cruise Awards come from both passengers and operators of cruise ships.

This year Akureyri will be visited by 123 cruise ships. The cruise ship passengers have provided a major boost to the local tourism industry, especially the whale watching tours operating in Eyjafjörður fjord.

The port master of Akureyri harbour told the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service that the Akureyri harbour authority has been working to improve the harbour area to improve the harbour's ability to accommodate cruise ships and their passengers. The harbour tried to do as much as it could, without making any major new time consuming or expensive investments

Icelandic harbours do very well in international comparison, he added, pointing out that that cruise ships have found it very easy to dock at the larger harbours in all the major fishing towns around the island. We regularly get very good responses from the cruise ship operators, and in fact all harbours in Iceland do.
