A large majority, or 88%, of aviation staff voted ‘yes’ to going on strike next week if wage agreements have not been reached, as reported by visir.is.
Flights to and from every airport in Iceland, domestic and international, would be affected by the strike. Staff will leave work from 4am until 9am on April the 8th, during which time all flights to and from Iceland will be delayed or cancelled. The Aviation Workers Association Chairman, Kristján Jóhannsson, says the solidarity within the group is significant, but going on strike is nobody’s first choice. He told ruv.is that Tuesday’s strike will be the first of three before the end of the month. He says Isavia is too busy focusing on enlarging Keflavik Airport and lacks interest in sitting down and talking to aviation staff.
An all-out strike is scheduled for April 30th. It would have a significant affect on one of Iceland’s most economically important industries, tourism.
