A unit from the U.S. Air Force is now located at Keflavík airport, Southwest Iceland, to provide a temporary air surveillance to Iceland’s airspace.
There is no army in Iceland, but the country is a member state of NATO and three times per year NATO allies deploy an air force unit to patrol the airspace lasting from two to three weeks each time.
Airmen of the U.S. 871st Air Expeditionary Squadron, currently based at Keflavík airport, last week joined an Icelandic environmental organization on a beach clean-up on the Reykjanes peninsula, where the airport is located. Almost three tons of trash and debris was removed along the coastline as a community service project. Well done indeed.
The United States Air Force deployed fighter units to Keflavík Air Base until September 2006 when the U.S. Iceland Defense Force was withdrawn after more than 50 decades presence in Iceland.
