Air traffic controllers' overtime ban caused delays at Keflavík airport this morning 3636

A number of flights were delayed at Keflavík Internationa Airport last night due to an unofficial overtime ban by Icelandic air traffic controllers. During the ban, which lasted from 2 am to 7 am, traffic was limited to abulance and emergency flights only. According to the National Broadcasting Service, RÚV, 4,000 passangers arriving from the US faced huge queues at the passport checks this morning due to the delays.

Air traffic controllers are currently in wage talks. They began the overtime ban last night, refusing to cover short notice sickness and absence.Two air traffic controllers who were supposed to be on duty last night called in sick, resulting in delays.

Guðni Sigurðsson, spokesperson for The Icelandic Civil Aviation Administration (ISAVIA), says the delays did not greatly affect check in as extra personnel had been called in to assist with this morning’s check in.  

Passengers are advised to monitor arrivals and departures on their airline’s websites or the website of Keflavik airport
