Náttúrustofa Norðausturlands, North East Iceland Nature Centre, is a regional institute for natural research and based in the town of Húsavík. Scientists are currently doing research near Búrfellsvirkjun power plant in central Iceland. The scientific investigation focuses on bird life in the area between Búrfell and Búðarháls and was instigated by The National Power Company.
When scientists arrived on site on March 27, they noticed a majestic white-tailed eagle which had had a stroke of luck and was pecking away at the carcass of ram. However, he soon had a hungry rival in the form of a vixen.
The scientists managed to film the two predators fighting for the carcass over 1200 metres (3937 ft) away from them.
White-tailed eagles are a rare sight outside of the Westfjord region, however, young males do tend to fly away to examine the world outside the breading season.
