The Minister of the Environment has announced that work will soon commence on a visitor centre for Snæfellsnes National Park, the local news site skessuhorn.is reports. The park, which covers the Snæfellsjökull glacier and the western tip of Snæfellsnes peninsula, has lacked a visitor centre. The park is among the most visited places in Iceland.

Preparation for a visitor centre for Snæfellsnes National Park began in 2006. The place and design for the planned centre were picked, but the project stalled due to the 2008 financial crisis and the economic recession which followed. Now the Ministry of the Environment has announced it has secured funding for the first stage of the construction, allowing work to start soon.

The completed visitor centre will be located near the fishing village of Hellissandur on the north shore of the peninsula. It will have a striking appearance which is supposed to echo the dramatic geological formations in the park, while serving as a reception for guests, where they can learn about the park, its history and geology. It will be 765 square meters (8,200 sq ft).
